Our History, 1991 to the present day

The Berkshire Woodturners Association (BWA) was founded on 28 October 1991 by Keith Sherwood, Brian Attewell and a small group of other woodturning friends. They originally met in Keith’s workshop to share ideas, projects and their enthusiasm for turning. What started as a small informal gathering quickly grew into something much bigger, with the club holding its first official meeting in Wokingham and attracting over 40 attendees.

Nearly 35 years later, the club continues to flourish, retaining the friendly and welcoming atmosphere established by its founders. Over the years, BWA has moved between several venues before settling at the Priestwood Community Centre in Bracknell. Today, the club attracts members from across a wide geographical area – some travelling more than 60 miles to attend – creating a vibrant and supportive community of woodturners of all abilities.

The club has always been passionate about helping members learn and develop their skills. Regular demonstrations by leading professional turners, hands-on workshops, competitions and skill development opportunities remain at the heart of club life. We have also embraced new technology, offering high-quality audio-visual demonstrations and live streamed events for members unable to attend in person.

BWA is proud of its strong community spirit, friendly atmosphere and long tradition of sharing skills and knowledge. Over the years, more than 200 members have enjoyed being part of the club, building friendships, developing their woodturning and learning from one another. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced turner, you can be sure of a warm welcome, plenty of encouragement and lots of inspiration.

Keith Sherwood’s valued contribution to the club is honoured through the annual Keith Sherwood Competition, where members vote for their favourite turned piece in each skill category, recognising creativity, craftsmanship and achievement across the club.
